Aklima Atika Konika, now a supermodel, anchor, debater, dancer, singer, and two-time national pageant winner, has been making waves in various fields. However, her journey to success was not without its challenges. Aklima was only 10 and was clueless when she was not able to cope up with her parents' expectations. Like her tech-genius brother, her parents wanted her to do something excellent. Later in her life, she was diagnosed with ADHD. However, she took this as a benefit and used all her energy in her mental health-related projects.
She was only 16 when she started her project named "Young Mind Matters" and started meeting experts and researching on how children can be empowered mentally to be able to do something that they desire. After getting certified in mental health support, Konika began providing online counseling services to girls in need. Through her dedicated efforts, she supported over 500 girls, providing them with guidance, support, and empowerment.
With this valuable experience, Konika started planning for her workshops in 2024. She collaborated with mental health expert Dr. Kushal and volunteer organization MBIT Volunteers to develop two workshops:
First Workshop focuses on teaching children practical strategies to manage stress, build resilience, and develop emotional intelligence. Through interactive sessions and activities, children learn to express their feelings, develop self-awareness, and build healthy relationships.
Second Workshop for Parents equips parents with the knowledge and skills to support their children's mental health. Parents learn to recognize signs of mental health issues, communicate effectively with their children, and create a supportive environment that fosters emotional well-being.
"I was skeptical at first, but after attending Konika's workshop, I realized the importance of mental health support for my child. Now, I feel more equipped to support my child's emotional well-being, and it's made a huge difference in our relationship," said Ferdousi, a mother who attended the workshop.
In 2024, Konika finished developing a comprehensive parental course on mental health, which covers topics such as:
Understanding child mental health and development
Recognizing signs of mental health issues in children
Effective communication strategies for parents
Creating a supportive environment for emotional well-being
Managing stress and anxiety in children
Building resilience and emotional intelligence in children
By providing parents with the knowledge and skills to support their children's mental health, Konika aims to empower families and communities to prioritize mental well-being.
Atika said, "I see so much reluctance in parents in addressing the need for mental health issues in children and adolescents. They think either they are lazy or not willing. However, there are so many ways to make them productive!" She also added, "This particular project is related to SDG 3 and 4. However, it also impacts SDG 8 and 16."
Atika said, "We must create a resilient nation where mental health needs to be a priority!" Her journey is a testament to the power of turning adversity into opportunity and inspiring others to do the same.
Let's join hands with Aklima Atika Konika to create a brighter future for our children, where mental health is valued and supported. Together, we can make a difference and empower the next generation to thrive.
